GPS Cell Phone Tips

Please note the following characteristics of GPS cell phones:

  1. GPS cell phones need a clear line of sight with the sky in order to establish a location.

They need to be outside to work properly. They can work inside vehicles and may obtain a location when near a large window; but they do not work indoors. For example, you would be able to view the location of a phone until it enters a shopping mall but you would not know its location once it was inside.

  2. The user of the phone will be aware that the application is running.

On the Motorola i88s and i58sr phones the uLocate application needs to be started up whenever the phone is powered on. There is a setting on the i730 that enables the app to start automatically when the phone is powered on. This is displayed on the screen of the phone, similar to the way a computer program starts.

  3. You need to ensure the cell phone stays charged.

Because the phone is sending its location every two minutes, it is using more battery power than it typically does and will need to be charged more frequently.
