uLocate > Getting Started with TrimTrac

I received my TrimTrac – Now what do I do?

Congratulations! You now have a TrimTrac! We are sure you want to see where the TrimTrac is when you go to uLocate’s web site.

In order for our service to record the location of your TrimTrac you need to setup an account on uLocate.

Please click here to register on ulocate and setup an account:

> Register here

You will need to know the phone number and carrier of your TrimTrac.

When you get to the screen to "add a device" please enter the TrimTrac phone number, carrier, and specify the phone type as "Trimble TrimTrac". When you are asked for a PIN please enter four zeroes (0000). This is actually not needed for the TrimTrac but it is necessary to enter a value in the PIN field.

Once you complete the registration you need to put batteries into your TrimTrac, insert the SIM chip provided by your cellular company, and close the TrimTrac.

The next step is to load the GPS almanac into your TrimTrac. The TrimTrac locator is shipped from the factory without almanac, time, and location information loaded into memory. The first time a TrimTrac locator is powered on after its initial provisioning, it is by definition in "cold start" mode because it does not have any of this information stored in flash memory. Moreover, the enhanced GPS sensitivity information is inactive.

Upon initial power up, the unit enters the Fix State and attempts to do a position fix. In doing so, it will collect information for any satellites that it is able to find and track. It will also begin collecting almanac pages.

If the TrimTrac locator is able to calculate an initial position fix, it will then spend the next 15-20 minutes collecting a complete almanac. Only after the unit has collected a complete almanac will it then transition to the Status State and then onto the Transmit State to send the position report to uLocate.

If the TrimTrac locator was unable to calculate a position fix prior to the timeout set during the initial provisioning process by your TrimTrac supplier the unit will skip the almanac collection step and proceed to the Status State. In this case, only a Status Report will be sent because no position fix was completed. The next time the unit enters the Fix State it will again attempt to collect a full almanac if, and only if, it successfully calculates a position.

In light of the above, it is recommended that the TrimTrac be allowed to calculate its initial position fix and collect the full almanac while stationary with a clear, unobstructed view of the sky after it is provisioned the first time. The unit will appear to be in the fix state for 15-20 minutes.

Please be patient - this takes about 20 minutes, and will only work if the unit has a clear view of the GPS satellites.

Please go outside, put the TrimTrac on top of your car or in another location that has no obstructions between the TrimTrac and the sky, shake the unit for about 20 seconds (which usually results in a light flashing) and then take a rest.

By now you are probably impatient and want to see your location on uLocate. The TrimTrac has a motion detector so either drive around with the unit in your windshield (on top of the dash) or shake it until the red light goes on (10-15 seconds). This will wake up the TrimTrac and send a location to the uLocate Service Center.

Wait a few minutes and then log into uLocate and you will see the location of your TrimTrac.

If you do not see the location please select the TrimTrac device from the drop down at the top of the screen, and then select "Messages" to see if it has sent messages.

We know there are a lot of steps here and welcome your suggestions to make this easier!
