uLocate > Getting Started with uLocate


There are 4 steps to getting up and running with !uLocate:

     Step 1: Confirm that you meet the cell phone / carrier requirement.

     Step 2: Download and setup the uLocate application on your cell phone.

     Step 3: Test that your data plan has been activated.

     Step 4: Open an account with uLocate.


  STEP 2: GETTING STARTED WITH !uLOCATE ON YOUR MOTOROLA i88s OR i58sr

1. Download the application on your phone.

Power up your phone. After the phone has powered up:

  1. Press the Menu button.
  2. Scroll to and highlight Java Apps and press RUN.
  3. A screen explaining the Download Apps will be displayed. After reviewing, press NEXT.
  4. A Download Apps list is displayed. Scroll to and highlight Free/Demo and press SELECT.
  5. The Free/Demo Apps list is displayed. Scoll to and hightlight !uLocate and press SELECT.
  6. AppDetails information about uLocate is displayed. After reviewing, press GET IT (lower left softkey). This will initiate the downloading of the application to your phone.
  7. A Thank You screen will be displayed with instructions. Follow the instructions on this screen, which are repeated here.
  8. After reviewing instructions, press EXIT (lower left softkey).
  9. The Java Apps screen will be displayed with !uLocate highlighted. Press INSTALL (If !uLocate is not highlighted, scroll to it and press INSTALL.)
  10. When the installation is complete, press DONE (lower left softkey.)
  11. The Java Apps screen will be displayed with !uLocate highlighted. Press EXIT and go to the uLocate web site to complete the registration form.

2. Setup the application on the phone.

In order for the phone to communicate its position to the uLocate server, you need to grant permission for this information to be sent. NOTE: this will only authorize the data to be sent to uLocate.

  1. With the phone powered on, press the Menu button. Scroll to and highlight GPS and press SELECT.
  2. Scroll to and highlight Privacy and press SELECT.
  3. Scroll to and hightlight By Permission and press SELECT.
  4. The GPS menu will be displayed, press EXIT.
  5. Now press the menu button.Scroll to and highlight Java Apps and press SELECT
  6. Scroll to and highlight !uLocate and press RUN.
  7. Confirm location requests can be sent to uLocate, press GRANT, then press ALWAYS.
  8. The display will indicate uLocate has been suspended. NOTE: It is actually running but in the background. Press RESUME to bring the app to the foreground.
  9. The app will now attempt to get a GPS fix (a GPS fix is the latitude and longitude that establish a location). To finish the application setup on the phone. Press MENU (the left softkey).
  10. Scroll to and highlight SET-UP and press SELECT.
  11. Enter the phone number and the PIN you used on the registration form and press SAVE (the right softkey).

The application is now running and the phone is capable of transmitting location information every two minutes assuming there is network coverage, you have the necessary data plan, and a GPS fix can be established.

At this time it is a good idea to confirm that you have an properly activated data plan (e.g. Total Connect for Nextel or Java Access Plan with Southern LINC)

Step 3: Test that your data plan has been activated.

NOTE: You can suspend the application to make or receive calls by pressing the red end call button twice. The screen will return to the Nextel default display. The application is still running. To return to the application, press the Menu button, scroll to and highlight Java Apps, press SELECT. The screen will display !uLocate suspended, press RESUME.
